Paul Taylor: A Portfolio Career Built on Learning, Service, and Humanity

In today’s fast-changing professional world, few leaders embody adaptability and lifelong growth as fully as Paul Taylor, founder of Paul Taylor Associates. With a career spanning more than three decades, Paul has built what he calls a “portfolio career,” combining consultancy, governance, teaching, writing, speaking, and mentorship into a purposeful whole. His journey is not just about success but about finding meaning in continuous learning, serving others, and valuing people.

“I started working in 1988 for a well-known UK private bank in their IT department. Because it was a small bank, I had exposure to a wide range of businesses, people, and technology,” Paul recalls.

This early breadth of experience prepared him for a career that would span global financial services, leadership roles, and eventually entrepreneurship.

From Banking to Freelancing

For almost 20 years, Paul worked across the financial services industry, rising to become Head of Software Development at a major European banking subsidiary. Yet despite the stability, he long felt drawn to freelancing.

“I had always thought about freelancing, but I was indecisive. Would I get work? Would I get a decent rate?” he reflects.

In 2007, he took the leap, initially focusing on project management. From outsourcing and technology projects to regulatory changes and interim leadership roles, he quickly discovered that freelancing offered not just freedom but the opportunity to broaden his impact. Over time, Paul transitioned into a portfolio career, blending consultancy with roles as Chair, Trustee, NED, lecturer, mentor, and author of five books.

A Success Mantra of Growth and Humanity

Paul attributes his success to three interlinked principles: continuous learning, client focus, and valuing people.

“The only constant in life is change—technology, regulation, society—so it’s important to keep learning so your skills and attitudes stay relevant,” he explains.

Equally central to him is delivering exceptional client service, whether for a small firm or a global enterprise. “Without clients, you cannot exist. Even if a client is challenging, you must manage that relationship,” he notes.

Above all, he stresses the human dimension. “Nearly all my work involves people—clients, students, colleagues, regulators. It’s essential to understand how people feel and what motivates them.”

Milestones That Matter

Paul has helped deliver enterprise-wide transformations, technology migrations, and operating model overhauls for blue-chip firms and social enterprises alike. He also counts the publication of five books among his proudest achievements.

“I have been lucky to work on great initiatives, from major transformations to publishing books. I feel truly blessed,” he shares.

Board advisory roles in fintech, education, and wellbeing have allowed him to shape governance and strategy, while his teaching and mentoring continue to inspire the next generation of professionals.

Traits That Define Success

When asked which traits have been most instrumental, Paul highlights curiosity, client service, empathy, and kindness.

“Keep learning and developing. Always provide the best service. Remember the human side. And above all—be a nice person. Nice people do succeed,” he emphasizes.

Today’s Work and Tomorrow’s Vision

Recently, Paul completed a major project for a UK wealth manager, overseeing outsourcing changes and technology rollouts. He now focuses on advisory work for charities—including one raising awareness of gambling addiction and another addressing the risks of artificial intelligence—alongside preparing for a new cohort of students.

“The gap in consultancy has allowed me to focus on writing more articles, which I’ve really enjoyed,” he says.

Looking ahead, Paul has no plans to slow down. “At the moment, I am happy with my career, although I’d like to keep learning, obtain more consultancy work, keep teaching, and take on a few more advisory roles. I have no real plans to retire—unless something nasty happens,” he remarks with a smile.

Overcoming Challenges

Of course, the journey has not been without obstacles. From managing difficult clients to filling knowledge gaps in new areas, Paul has relied on resilience and openness.

“Never be afraid to admit you don’t know something. Learn through courses, seminars, or simply by asking others,” he advises.

Time management and networking have also been crucial to sustaining his portfolio career. “As a freelancer, you must constantly be looking for work, keeping your profile visible, and building relationships,” he explains.

Advice for Future Leaders

Paul’s guidance for aspiring leaders is both practical and inspiring:

· Keep learning and developing.

· Always provide the best service to your clients.

· Never forget the human side.

“Be curious, respect people, and stay true to who you are. Success is not just about reaching targets but about integrity and making a lasting impact,” he concludes.

Paul Taylor’s career illustrates the power of versatility and purpose. By combining expertise with empathy and continuously embracing change, he has built a professional life that is both impactful and deeply human—showing that success is not just what you achieve, but how you achieve it.
